PSHE

Intent

At Springdale Primary School, we aim to ensure that our “PSHE education equips children and young people with knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to live healthy, safe, productive, fulfilled, capable and responsible lives.” We believe that personal, social and health education (PSHE) enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. It helps them to develop personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We provide our children with opportunities to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate and respect what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. We also instill the importance of being a caring , respectful, responsible citizen and ensure that our children recognise the importance of respecting and protecting the environment. We deliver a PSHE curriculum that is accessible to all pupils which promotes their spiritual, moral, social, cultural, emotional and physical development. We ensure that our children understand how to maintain healthy relationships, how to stay safe and how to develop positive, healthy relationships both now and in their future lives.

Implementation

PSHE lessons are taught weekly and the PSHE school curriculum focusses upon three core learning themes:

  • Health and Wellbeing

  • Relationships

  • Living in the Wider World

At Springdale  school we use SCARF (Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience, Friendship), a comprehensive scheme of work for PSHE and Wellbeing education. These materials are also supplemented with a range of high quality age appropriate teaching resources which supports the individual needs of our school.  An overview of our PSHE curriculum can be found in 'PSHE at School' at the top of this page and the 'PSHE at home' there is a link to SCARF resources which  supports our learning at school.

Each half term has a unit theme:

  • Autumn 1 - Me and My Relationships: includes content on feelings, emotions, conflict resolution and friendships

  • Autumn 2 - Valuing Difference: a focus on respectful relationships and British Values

  • Spring 1 -  Rights, Respect, Responsibilities: learning about money, living the wider world and the environment

  • Spring 2 - Being Healthy : developing skills in keeping healthy, developing a growth mindset (resilience), goal-setting and achievement

  • Summer 1 - Keeping Safe: looking at keeping ourselves healthy and safe.

  • Summer 2 - Growing and Changing: finding out about the human body, the changes that take place from birth to old age and being safe.

All topics - many of which are sensitive are taught to an age appropriate level. Safety focusses are addressed each term, with e-safety taught as part of the computing curriculum and reinforced in PSHE. Lessons involve class discussions alongside group activities and evidence of the work completed is gathered into a class floor book or individual book as appropriate so that greater focus is placed on the discussions and the children’s understanding of what is taught, rather than written recording. Our assemblies focus on a PSHE theme often linked to the learning focus across school for that term.

Impact

The effective teaching of PSHE impact upon the pupils in the following ways:

  • They will be kind and caring towards each other, taking pride in their own heritage and cultural tradition whilst being understanding and tolerant of others.

  • They will become technologically confident whilst remaining safe in an increasingly sophisticated world.

  • They will be hard-working and well-motivated, looking at ways to improve their own performance.

  • They will develop their self-esteem and personal confidence.

  • They will take pride in their own achievements and those of others.

  • They will listen carefully to each other, respond with positivity, always try to find a way forward but know when adult help is needed and who they can go to when these situations arise.

  • They will develop positive and healthy relationships with their peers both now and in the future.

  • They will understand the physical aspects involved in Relationship and Sex Education at an age appropriate level.

  • They will have respect for themselves and others.

  • They will value the implications of living in a diverse society.

  • They will have positive body images.

  • They will understand a range of emotions and how to deal with them.

  • They will recognise and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty.
